What Prediabetes Actually Is
Prediabetes is defined by blood glucose levels that are higher than normal but below the threshold for type 2 diabetes diagnosis. The diagnostic criteria depend on which test is used. A fasting glucose between 100 and 125 mg/dL (5.6 to 6.9 mmol/L) is classified as impaired fasting glucose. An HbA1c between 5.7% and 6.4% indicates prediabetes. A two-hour glucose between 140 and 199 mg/dL on an oral glucose tolerance test indicates impaired glucose tolerance. These are not arbitrary cutoffs. Monitoring
After a prediabetes diagnosis, HbA1c or fasting glucose should be checked at least annually.
